SCIENCE TEACHING via “Learning in Depth”

LiD is a new program that has was first introduced to schools in British Columbia, Canada, in 2008, and has since spread to many other countries. We will begin to describe the program by taking information from the LiD website, and then we will explore briefly why the program seems to offer a significant new contribution to developing students’ scientific understanding. This is how the website describes LiD:

“Learning in Depth” is a simple though radical innovation in curriculum and instruction designed to ensure that all students become experts about something during their school years. Each child is given a particular topic to learn about through her or his whole school career, in addition to the usual curriculum, and builds a personal portfolio on the topic. To the surprise of many, children usually take to the program with great enthusiasm, and within a few months LiD begins to transform their experience as learners. The program usually takes about an hour a week, with the students working outside school time increasingly

The site then goes on to acknowledge that the LiD program—beginning perhaps in Kindergarten or Grade 1 or 2 and continuing through a student’s whole school career––will seem a little odd. But the program is being used in schools in a number of countries with striking success—particularly with the students. Very many students consider it their favorite activity in school.
